The migration phenomenon in Mexico has recently been linked to the proliferation of immigration detention centers and an intense militarization of borders, but also to less visible border production mechanisms such as the convergence between nature conservation and national security policies between Mexico and the United States, or disappearance and absence as epistemic infrastructures that produce ignorance. The discussion will focus on the formation and reorganization of legal, technological and natural infrastructures that proliferate on the borders between the United States, Mexico and Guatemala.
El fenómeno migratorio en México se ha vinculado recientemente con la proliferación de centros de detención migratoria y con una intensa militarización de las fronteras, pero también con mecanismos de producción de frontera menos visibles como son la convergencia entre las políticas de conservación de la naturaleza y las de seguridad nacional entre México y Estados Unidos, o la desaparición y la ausencia como infraestructuras epistémicas que producen paradójicamente desconocimiento. El conversatorio abordará la formación y reorganización de infraestructuras legales, tecnológicas y naturales que proliferan en los territorios fronterizos entre México, Estados Unidos y Guatemala.

Political borders, the material boundaries between States, are today places of movement and immobility. Migrants in camps contrast with the traffic of goods accumulated in trailers and trucks. At some borders we can see walls, at others nothing more than the mapped extensions of nature. At these coordinates, frictions and disputes, encounters and conflicts arise. Borders extend in the form of detention centers and migration stations; but they are also reconfigured in artistic interventions or maps painted on the walls of a migrant shelter. In the anxiety of the images, aesthetics, ways of seeing, absences, announced visibilities are insinuated.
Las fronteras políticas, los límites materiales entre los Estados, son hoy lugares de movimiento e inmovilidad. Los migrantes apostados en campamentos contrastan con el tráfico de mercancías acumuladas en trailers y camiones. En alguna frontera podemos ver los muros, en otras nada más que las extensiones cartografiadas de la naturaleza. En esas coordenadas, surgen fricciones y disputas, encuentros y conflictos. Las fronteras se extienden, bajo la forma de centros de detención y estaciones migratorias; se reconfiguran en intervenciones artísticas o mapas pintados en las paredes de un refugio para migrantes. En la zozobra de las imágenes se insinúan estéticas, modos de ver, ausencias, visibilidades anunciadas.

In this panel, we revisit the concept of "convergent migrations", proposed by researcher Columba González-Duarte, to explore the ecological and political connections and disconnections of different places along continental migratory routes. From north to south and south to north, the authors examine the transformations of vast ecosystems that traverse and shape diverse border territories, and that are interwoven, in complex and unique ways, with flows of bodies, goods, and ways of life, human and non-human, in the face of a socio-environmental crisis: The territories of the monarch butterfly in its migratory transit through three border nation-states; the struggles of activist communities for the rights of nonhuman animals on the border between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso; or the criminalization of nonhuman life forms on the Amazonian borders.
En el tercer conversatorio retomamos el concepto de “migraciones convergentes”, propuesto por la investigadora Columba González-Duarte, para explorar las conexiones y des-conexiones, ecológicas y políticas, de distintos lugares a lo largo de las rutas migratorias continentales. De norte a sur y de sur a norte, las autoras examinan las transformaciones de vastos ecosistemas que atraviesan y dan forma a diversos territorios fronterizos, y que se entretejen, de maneras complejas y singulares, con flujos de cuerpos, mercancías y formas de vida, humanas y no humanas: los territorios de la mariposa monarca en su tránsito migratorio a través de tres Estados-nación fronterizos; las luchas de comunidades activistas por el derecho de los animales no humanos en la frontera entre Ciudad Juárez y El Paso; o la criminalización de formas de vida no-humanas en las fronteras amazónicas.

Fieldwork implies bodily presence of the researcher at the site of research. The processes and experiences of conducting fieldwork therefore are not only about satisfying the objectives of research questions. But fieldwork is also about exploring the epistemological issues that emerge from questions of affect, personal reflection, and interpersonal connections. Among myriad themes, from those involving traumatic experiences or experiential accounts of the research participants to those that directly concern our research questions, sensitivity to the embodied nature of fieldwork can provide valuable research insights. This exhibition/workshop is aimed primarily at researchers with initial experiences in the field, although it may be helpful for more experienced researchers. Participants will share their experiences of coherence and rupture and in order to build a dialogue surrounding the theoretical, methodological, and ethical issues that arise in their research. Based on ethnographic vignettes from fieldwork experiences of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, we will construct an open reflection on methods and modes of engagement around notions such as the event, improvisation or fracture of the research script, confusion, and embodiment as an epistemological tool for interrogating the ethics of fieldwork in the context of migration and borders.
El trabajo de campo implica una presencia corporal de quien investiga, de tal modo que el registro de esa experiencia no trata únicamente de satisfacer los objetivos de una pregunta de investigación, sino también de explorar cuestiones epistemológicas en relación con los afectos, los vínculos y contactos que emergen, o incluso en torno a las condiciones de riesgo físico/mental que pueden ocurrir.. A menudo estos registros son relegados como secundarios o aparecen como meras curiosidades respecto al propósito de la investigación. En diversas temáticas, desde aquellas que conllevan experiencias traumáticas o vivenciales de les participantes, como aquellas que conciernen directamente a las cuestiones de nuestras investigaciones, dichas sensibilidades pueden aportar materiales valiosos para la investigación. A partir de viñetas etnográficas de las y los estudiantes de doctorado e investigadores posdoctorales, construiremos una reflexión abierta sobre métodos y modos en torno a nociones como el acontecimiento, la improvisación o la fractura del guión de investigación, la confusión y la afectación del cuerpo como herramientas epistemológicas con relación a una ética del trabajo de campo en el contexto migratorio y de las fronteras.
